City of Globe Community Center Swimming Pool
Globe, Arizona, USA
For nearly 10 years the City of Globe Community Swimming Pool sat empty. On June 2, 2023, it finally reopened after a major renovation that utilized the “Natare Trifecta” renovation system.
Pool’s History
In 2014 the pool was forced to shut down due to continuous water loss and mechanical components that were at the end of their useful life.
- The concealed concrete gutters had failed along with the perimeter piping.
- The pool basin was in major disrepair.
- Lastly, the facility did not have a working filtration system.
For many years after its closure, there were several discussions about making some repairs, but then the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
In 2021, the renovation plans were revived. As discussions proceeded about how the swimming pool would be best used, city residents began expressing their opinions on the types of features they would like to see. Based on that feedback, the City realized the pool needed a complete overhaul to accommodate the growing population and particular needs.
The pool’s square footage was doubled in size and many amenities were added including:
- Splash pad
- Zero-entry area
- New decking
- Heater to lengthen swim season
- Moving bulkhead to allow competitive swimming
- Community center that would offer additional programming activities
The Natare Trifecta
Working with our pool builder partner, Natare was chosen to provide many aquatic components that would not only extend the life of the pool by many years but would save the City time and money in annual maintenance, and allow additional programming to be added.
To accomplish the City’s needs, we utilized the “Natare Trifecta” which incorporates three of our top products, and in this case, the addition of a pool bulkhead.
Stainless Steel Perimeter Pool Gutter System: This replaced the original concrete gutters and failed piping. Our gutter system was the most economical solution for this project because it would provide consistent skimming along the pool water surface and the perimeter supply tube would eliminate the need for traditional perimeter piping. The City also chose to include automatic surge control weirs within the gutter system which would keep the pool water circulating when not in use, thus eliminating the need for their existing surge tank.
Vacuum Sand Filtration System: The existing filtration system and surge tank were no longer viable options. Since the new perimeter pool gutters incorporated automatic surge control weirs, the need for a surge tank was eliminated and the footprint for the VSF system was automatically created since the filter room was positioned along the deep end of the swimming pool. With this setup, no additional excavation around the area was needed. Thanks to the new Natare filtration system, the water is crystal clear and the need for constant maintenance is eliminated.
PVC Membrane: The pool basin was in extremely poor condition but was ultimately saved with our reinforced PVC membrane in addition to the extensive repairs that were made. The membrane is a flexible layer of PVC with an extremely strong inner core of polyester mesh fabric that is cust cut, fitted, and bonded onsite to ensure a completely watertight pool surface. With the installation of our PVC membrane, the City would never have to worry about re-plastering or fixing chipped paint again, avoiding the expensive cost of yearly maintenance and the threat of a patron suffering an injury. The membrane was also installed on the new splash pad, which would give kids a much softer and slip-resistant surface to run around and play on.
Moving Pool Bulkhead: During the pool’s extended closure, the Globe Swim Team did not have a place to practice or hold competitive swimming meets. As the renovation plans progressed, we recommended that a moving pool bulkhead be included. With this addition, the pool can now be adjusted for multiple course lengths and allow for multi-use of the pool simultaneously for different programs. Not only does the Piranha swim team have a place to practice and hold competitions, but the City is now able to offer additional programming opportunities to the residents.
With the addition of many exciting new features and the utilization of the Natare Trifecta, the City of Globe Community Swimming Pool has been revitalized to its fullest potential and will welcome families and competitive swim teams for years to come.
